Historically, Virginians have laid claim to some of the lowest electric rates Nationwide. According to the Edison Electric Institute, based on overall rates, Virginia had the 11th lowest electric rates in the country in 2007.

Yet the last three years have seen dramatic increases in electric costs for all consumer classes: residential, commercial, and industrial.

APCo’s residential rates have soared by 55% since 2006. From 2007 to 2009, average commercial rates for APCo experienced a 34% increase and APCo’s industrial rates increased almost 43%.

Although these increases have been felt statewide, nowhere has the increase in rates been more dramatic or deeply felt than in the APCo service area. 

This is just plain wrong.

Our part of Virginia has been especially hard-hit by the economic recession. Unemployment here is higher than anywhere else in the state. Our familes and businesses are struggling.

I have been fighting these rate increases and is working to change the laws to return fairness to our electric rates.
